Act II — Uncomfortable

The Slot Machine

Why does the same prompt give you different answers each time?

Because you're not having a conversation. You're pulling a lever.

The prompt engineering industry told you to pull it a specific way. "Act as a senior engineer. Think step by step. Give me three options." They're not wrong — some pulls DO pay out more often. The mechanics are real.

But you're still at a slot machine calling it a relationship.

Casinos spent decades optimizing for near-misses. Close enough to feel meaningful. Far enough to need another pull. The intermittent reinforcement schedule is the same one that keeps you checking your phone.

AI platforms optimized for the same thing. The good response feels like a breakthrough. The bad response feels like your fault — you didn't phrase it right. So you rephrase. And pull again.

The variable reward schedule isn't an accident. It's the product.
